As someone who has suffered from allergic rhinitis for years, let me be frank: allergic rhinitis can hardly be cured completely in one go. The core strategy is to reduce allergen exposure and relieve symptoms as needed. I’ve compiled a personally tested set of solutions covering both emergency relief and long-term protection.

I. Quick relief during flare-ups

Saline nasal irrigation (highly recommended, no side effects) Do this once or twice daily, preferably right after coming indoors. It directly washes away pollen and dust mites trapped in the nasal cavity, rapidly easing nasal itching and congestion. Safe for both adults and children, it is recognized as a fundamental nasal care method by otolaryngologists.

Medication as directed (consult a doctor for severe symptoms)

· Mild flare-ups: Second-generation oral antihistamines to quickly stop sneezing and clear runny nose.

· Moderate to severe cases with obvious congestion: Use intranasal corticosteroids as prescribed. Consistent use delivers better results. Do not self-medicate long-term arbitrarily. Seek an in-person consultation with an otolaryngologist for serious rhinitis.

Temporary physical relief Inhale warm steam or gently massage both sides of the nasal root to ease swelling and congestion of the nasal mucosa. This only serves as temporary support and cannot replace medicated sprays.

II. Long-term protection: Cut down flare-ups at the source (top priority)

Recurring rhinitis is mostly caused by persistent allergens in the environment: artemisia pollen in autumn, indoor dust mites, pet dander and mold. Many people only remember wearing masks outdoors but overlook one point — pollen sticks to clothes and hair and is carried back to homes or hotel rooms. It keeps floating in enclosed spaces and irritates the nasal passages overnight. This explains why many people feel fine during the day yet suffer rhinitis attacks the moment they get home or go to bed.

· Wear masks and goggles when going out during pollen seasons. Change outerwear and wash your face immediately after returning indoors.

· Wash bedding weekly with water above 55°C to curb dust mite growth.

· Minimize carpets, plush toys and other items that easily accumulate dust.

· Use an indoor air purifier to continuously lower airborne allergen levels. It brings remarkable improvements for people allergic to pollen and dust mites.

I have been using the Kangbeijing KJ-15BA air purifier, specially for seasonal pollen and indoor dust mites. It features an integrated rounded panel body with sturdy structure and smooth surface for easy daily wiping and cleaning. Built-in anti-tip power cut and child lock functions make it safe for households with young kids.

Adopting a dual air intake design, it delivers abundant airflow and completes full-room air circulation in three minutes. Equipped with a composite filter combining activated carbon and potassium permanganate, it efficiently traps allergenic particles such as dust and pollen. Its built-in DBD plasma purification module works safely with people present in the room, achieving a 99.99% inactivation rate against bacteria and viruses.

At its lowest operating setting, it runs at an ultra-quiet 5 decibels, barely audible when placed in the bedroom at night. It comes with an LCD touchscreen and AIoT smart module for real-time air quality monitoring and adjustable fan speeds. It also supports APP remote control and voice interaction. Whether at home or in hotels for short trips, it continuously purifies air to reduce allergen inhalation and lower the chance of rhinitis flare-ups.

Final takeaway

Allergic rhinitis is a long-term battle. For emergencies, rely on nasal irrigation and proper medication. To reduce repeated attacks, the key is to block persistent airborne allergens. Combine outdoor protection with indoor air purification, and you will suffer far less during seasonal transitions. If rhinitis worsens frequently, see a doctor promptly for assessment. You may also ask about allergen immunotherapy if needed.
